Children, like many adults, sometimes have difficulty falling asleep. Sleep problems are a very common problem that parents face in today’s hectic lifestyle. Very often sleep problems become chronic and are cause for concern. We all know that sleep is essential for a child’s overall health and well-being and that it allows the body to rest and function at an optimal level the following day. Lack of sleep not only comprises the immune system, but is also believed to affect growth.

Colic is one of those conditions that affect babies - one that just doesn’t seem fair. Your baby is so very new to this big world and what an introduction to life! Medically speaking, colic is defined as crying for more than three hours a day, three days per week, for longer than three weeks in an otherwise happy and healthy baby.

Nightmares are scary dreams that awaken children and often make them afraid to go back to sleep. They usually occur during the REM (rapid eye movement) period which happens during the last third of sleep and so are most common in the very early hours of the morning. Although adults also experience nightmares, because young children are learning new information and absorbing new experiences at an exceptionally rapid rate, they are more prone to bad dreams and waking up during the night.

A headache is a characterized by aching pain or discomfort in the head, scalp, face or neck. Most headaches occur biologically outside the skull in the blood vessels, nerves, and muscles that surround the head and neck. When the muscles or blood vessels swell, they put pressure on the nerves. The nerves in turn send pain messages to the brain, and the individual suffers from a headache.

The appendix is a small, finger-like structure attached to the large intestine in the lower right side of the abdomen. Sometimes, this structure becomes blocked, causing swelling. The appendix can quickly then become the habitat of a bacterial infection. This inflammation and infection of the appendix is referred to as appendicitis, and it is considered a medical emergency.

Jaundice is the term used to describe the yellowish appearance of the skin and whites of the eyes that occurs when the blood contains an excess amount of pigmentation. This pigmentation is known as bilirubin, a natural product that occurs from the normal breakdown of red blood cells by the spleen in the body. It is then carried to the liver to be excreted in the bile. Jaundice is not a disease, but is most affected as a result liver diseases.

The liver is the second largest organ in the body, and is often seen as the most important one. In traditional Chinese medicine, for example, a healthy liver is seen as the most critical element in the body's ability to fight disease and function optimally.

Sterility, also referred to as infertility, is defined as an inability to conceive a child after trying to do so for at least one year. Sterility can affect both men and women, with the cause involving either one or both parties.

The medical term shock refers to the organs and tissues of the body not receiving a sufficient flow of blood. As a result of the imbalance of oxygen supply and demand, a build up of waste products occurs and can cause damage to the organs. This type of shock is known as physiological shock and can result in collapse, coma or even death if it is not treated immediately.

A sore throat is usually due to an infection in the throat area. Sore throat causes are mostly related to cases of pharyngitis or tonsillitis. Aside from pain in the throat area, the sore throat symptoms can also include a reddish appearance or swelling in the throat, ear pain, difficulty swallowing, and a high fever.
